The Menu from the “ Russian world”

The article from the magazine “OstroV”, which is about the restaurants in Donetsk city during the occupation period which was written by the journalist Ruslan Birukov, was very interesting for me (http://www.ostro.org/donetsk/society/articles/478065/)

To tell the truth, I perfectly know that a lot of “luxury” restaurants and cafes in the city are continuing to work and has moved into the “side of evil”. Despite that fact that the residents of Donetsk don`t have enough money, there are a lot of people who willingly spend their time in those luxury places.

There is one thing, which has baffled me after reading the article, it`s a still functioning “Lviv chocolate workshop” (1). I don`t understand, how the terrorists allowed the only Ukrainian-speaking institution to work in their DNR(2). Is it really true that Lviv didn’t close its branch on the occupied territory and continues to receive its profit in RUBs (₽)(3)? One can only be jealous of the courage of that working staff. But I really doubt they talk to the residents in Ukrainian.

“McDonalds” has another situation. When the conflict in the Donbas region began, they went away from the city. And it’s logical, because they can allow themselves to lose a couple of branches in the Donbas region, because of high profits in other regions of Ukraine.

Donetsk has some differences in the restaurant business between “before” and “after” – it’s an availability of prices in RUBs (₽) and UAHs (₴)(4) in Menus.The residents have recognized, that they are the “state prostitutes”; they can’t understand according to which law they should live – to the Russian or Ukrainian.They live on that side, where it is more comfortable.

Once I asked my Donetsk acquaintance about the attitude to RUBs circulating along with UAHs and I got the next answer: “To tell the truth, I don`t really care, I want to live normally”. Meanwhile, the majority of “such people” are sitting at home without any work.

I don’t know, how these “Republicans” can live, sleep, eat, when they live inside the undeclared war. But despite all mentioned above, life in Donetsk is continuing and when the war stops, some faithful “vatniks” (5) with their Republican ideas will remain, the have already sold their souls for RUBs and the Russia`s idea of the “Russian world” (6).

1. “Lviv chocolate workshop” is a famous net of cafes throughout Ukraine, where the chocolate is hand made and staff speaks only Ukrainian.

2. DNR (English: DPR (the Donetsk People's Republic)) - an unrecognized state, supported by several rebel groups, based in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, where they control the territory.

3. RUB (₽) – Russian currency.

5. “Vatnik” is a derogatory social slang neologism in Ukrainian and Russian languages, used in reference to the individuals with pro-Russian jingoistic views.

6. “Russian World” is a global project, which is a part of the “Russian World Foundation”, founded by decree of Vladimir Putin in 2007 aimed at promoting the Russian language and Russian values all over the world.
