Who wants to fire?

I have read a lot about legalization of weapon in Ukraine. As usual, there are two different groups of people: supporters and skeptics. I have been monitoring a very active discussion between the opponents and supporters of weapon legalization on FB.

I can’t say, that those arguments from both sides have persuaded me: some people are insisting, that this weapon can save their families from criminals and "gopniks"(1), and some say, it is dangerous to give allowance for weapon to everybody. These thoughts are both true and false.

Let's imagine the situation, that one allows legalization of weapon. Before you buy it(you should have money for this) you should pass a lot of procedures. But your strong will to get a gun will win and you’ll overcome all the challenges on the way to your new fancy weapon.

And here you have a gun. You walk along the street and suddenly hooligans attack you: firstly you would take out the weapon and try to scare the offenders. You would be waiting, that they would get afraid and, of course, would go away, leaving the stupid idea of attacking you. But instead of this, they would take out their weapons too, like you, and would shoot at your close people. As a result - disability, traumas, death. When the investigation starts, the hooligans, who would pretend to be respectable people, would say, that they were just protecting themselves. It will take a lot of time to investigate this accident, and it will be possible to return neither your nor their lives even, if they are convicted of this crime.

We can imagine another situation, where you use the weapon in the same situation and it helps you to scare the hooligans. Something like Steven Seagal- style. Situations can be different, where weapon both can help and can do harm. You can never understand by appearance - is this person aggressive or quiet and keep the weapon only to feel secured?

If you want to defend yourself and your close people, take up martial arts and you will be able to stand up for yourself. And if there is a difficult conflict, you should call the police. I want to underline, they receive money for monitoring the order and tranquility. As for me, I want to say, that I'm not sure, that I would like to live in a country, where everyone can freely buy the weapon. As practice shows, it’s very difficult to prove something in our country and we really have a very sufficient amount of silly people.

Author's Note:

1. “Gopnik " is a pejorative term and a social slur used in post-Soviet countries, and Israel to refer to young lower-class suburban male dwellers (usually under 30 years of age) coming from families of poor education and income, somewhat similar to British chavs or neds sub-cultures.
